When I was growing up my mom would make the most delicious meat sauce to go over spaghetti. She was a religious canner at the end of the summer season, so we always had a bounty of canned tomatoes to make sauce with. She cooked it low and slow and it was absolute heaven. We always had a big green salad and some kind of bread and butter for soaking up all the saucy remnants from the plate. Did I mention it was heaven?

When my schedule allows it, I enjoy making a batch of meat sauce from scratch like my mom did. But when you don’t have the extra time, this Meat Sauce with Mushrooms is as close as you get to the real deal. It has depth of flavor as if it were cooked for hours, it’s thick and meaty, and absolutely delicious.

The Best Ground Meat For Meat Sauce:

I like using a combination of lean ground turkey and Italian turkey sausage; usually a 2-1 ratio. Italian sausage whether it’s pork or turkey is seasoned with spices and herbs, giving the meat sauce an authentic flavor. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I prefer ground turkey over beef but use whatever ground meat you like; beef, pork, lamb, or chicken.

Store-Bought Pasta Sauce:

If you’ve ever visited the pasta isle at the grocery store you know the variety of pasta sauce there is to choose from. They even have ones that include the meat it you’re really in a pinch.🤭 Here are some of my favorite store-bought pasta sauces that are rich in flavor; you would never know they came from a jar.

  • Mezzetta Tomato Basil – This is one of my favorites. It’s thick and rich and doesn’t have any added sugars, preservatives, or GMO’s.
  • Rao’s Pasta Sauce – They are especially known for their marinara sauce. Flavorful, no sugars added, carb conscious, and all-natural.
  • Newman’s Own Sockarooni – This pasta sauce has a chunkier consistency so it creates a thicker, meatier sauce.
  • Emeril’s Tomato Basil – You can’t go wrong with Emeril. He has a variety of sauces made with quality ingredients.
