Fresh, healthy, and quick to make.

When I came across the idea for Greek Pita Burgers, I was instantly intrigued. I had never really thought about transforming a classic hamburger into something with a Mediterranean twist, but it just made sense. Juicy grilled beef patties, cool and creamy feta yogurt sauce, and all those crisp, fresh toppings tucked into a soft pita? Yes please!

These Greek Pita Burgers are fresh, flavorful, and such a fun way to switch up burger night without overcomplicating things. This is a quick 30-minute or less dinner and I've curated the recipe, perfect for two! If you love Mediterranean flavors as much as I do, you will love these!

And here's the real test-my husband is pretty loyal to a traditional burger. Give him a classic cheeseburger and he's happy. But these? He loved them. He's a big reason why most of my recipes make it on the blog. If he approves, it's a win!

Ingredients You Need

  • Ground beef- I use a slightly higher fat-85/15. This keeps the burgers juicy without drying out.
  • Seasoning for beef- Salt, pepper, garlic powder, dried oregano
  • Pita bread- Make sure to find pita pocket style pita bread, to easily stuff with your burger goodies.
  • Feta yogurt sauce- Greek yogurt, feta cheese, fresh dill, lemon zest and juice, salt and pepper
  • Toppings- Cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion

Quick to Make Greek Burgers

  • Combine the sauce ingredients in a bowl and place in the refrigerator.
  • Season and shape ground beef. Add beef and seasonings to a bowl and combine. Form into two balls.
  • Shape patties and grill. Form each ball into an oval shape, then grill until cooked through.
  • Assemble pita burgers. Spread some yogurt sauce on the inside of a pita pocket then tuck in the beef patty. Spread a little more yogurt sauce on beef, then top with cucumbers, tomato, and red onion.

Ang's Helpful Tips

  • Chill the yogurt sauce for at least 20-minutes. The coolness of the sauce is perfect with the warm beef patties. Allowing the sauce to sit helps to meld the flavors.
  • If you don't have a grill, no problem! While the grill offers a smoky taste, pan frying is perfectly fine.
  • Slice fresh ingredients thin so they fit nicely in the pita pocket. If the cucumbers and tomatoes are too thick it can break the pita pocket.
  • Enjoy pita burgers right away. Pita bread can become soggy quickly. Once your burger is assembled you'll want to enjoy immediately, although, you won't be able to resist it long anyway.

Variations and Substitutions

These burgers are easy to customize and use your favorite protein and fresh ingredients.

  • Swap the protein: Try ground chicken or turkey for a lighter option.
  • Use burger buns: Assemble patties, sauce, and toppings on burger buns for a more classic burger experience.
  • Extra toppings: Kalamata olives or a sprinkle of extra feta take these over the top.
  • Go low-carb: Skip the pita and serve everything over a salad.

Equipment

  • small bowl
  • medium bowl
  • indoor or outdoor grill or use frying pan on the stove.

Ingredients

Beef

  • ½ lb ground beef I use 85/15
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Feta yogurt sauce

  • ½ cup Plain Greek yogurt, full-fat
  • 3 tablespoon feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, roughly chopped or use 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • ½ small lemon, zested and juiced
  • salt and pepper to taste

Additionals

  • 2 pita pocket halves
  • English cucumber slices, thinly sliced about 4-5 cucumbers per pita burger
  • 1 Roma tomato, sliced thin
  • red onion slices

Instructions

  • In a small bowl combine the feta yogurt sauce ingredients and place in the fridge until you're ready to assemble the burgers.
  • Heat your grill to medium high heat or if you're using a skillet, also medium high.
  • To a bowl, add the ground beef ingredients and combine well, but don't over-work the beef too much otherwise your patties will be tough.
  • Divide the beef mixture into two and roll into balls, then form into two oval shape patties.
  • Grill patties until cooked through about 5 minutes per side for medium well.
  • Assemble pita burgers by spreading about 1 tablespoon of feta yogurt sauce on the inside of your pita pockets. Carefully place cooked burger patties in the pita, then spread a little more sauce over the patty. Tuck cucumber, tomato, and onion slices in the pita. Serve burgers with extra sauce and enjoy immediately.
