Ground Turkey Teriyaki Rice Bowls is a fun and delicious addition we will have many times over.
This recipe comes together super fast (almost 30-minutes) and I also love that it’s high in protein and loaded with tons of veggies. My favorite kind of meal! The flavor is fresh with a sweet, umami taste. This dish is filling and satisfies in a good way.
We love to serve this over white or brown rice to soak up the yummy teriyaki sauce, but feel free to use couscous or quinoa to add even more nutrition. Elevate this dish with my Easy Coconut Rice or Cilantro Lime Rice.
See how simple these teriyaki rice bowls are to make!
Simple Ingredients:
- Teriyaki sauce- Soy sauce, hoisin sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and corn starch to thicken.
- Sesame oil- This adds a wonderful sesame flavor to the entire dish. A little goes a long way!
- Ground turkey- I like to use lean ground turkey for optimal health.
- Veggies- Carrots, broccoli, and green onion.
- Water Chestnuts- This adds great texture and a light crunch.
- Cilantro- I like to add fresh cilantro for a pop of flavor right before serving.
- Rice- I love to use basmati long-grain white rice.
Substitutions:
- Meat- Use ground chicken or beef in place of the ground turkey. Make sure the beef is on the leaner side.
- Veggies- Add other veggies like bell peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, cabbage or snap peas.
- Optional ingredients- Folks tend to love or hate water chestnuts and cilantro. If you don’t like it just leave it out! It will still be delicious.
How To Make Ground Turkey Teriyaki Rice Bowls:
See full instructions in recipe card below
Step One. Combine the teriyaki sauce ingredients in a small sauce pan reserving 1/4 cup water and the cornstarch for later. Bring mixture to a medium boil. Stir together the water and corn starch until smooth and slowly add it to the boiling liquid. Use a whisk and stir until thickened. Set aside until ready to use.
Step Two. In a large skillet over medium heat add sesame oil and ground turkey. Cook turkey breaking into crumbles until no longer pink. Add carrots, broccoli, and green onion and cook until veggies are tender.
Step Three. Add prepared teriyaki sauce along with water chestnuts to the turkey and veggies. Cook a few minutes to marry ingredients together then serve over rice with fresh cilantro and additional green onions if you like.
Recipe Tips:
- đź’ˇPrep ingredients before you start cooking. It is super helpful to have all the ingredients prepped and ready to go before you turn on the stove. The steps move along quickly and it makes the process much better if all items are ready to go!
- đź’ˇExtra sauce- This meal isn’t super saucy but I feel it’s enough for our family to enjoy the dish. You can always add a splash more of each teriyaki sauce ingredient if you like yours extra saucy.
- đź’ˇMake lettuce wraps. Skip the rice and use lettuce cups as a foundation for your turkey, veggie, and teriyaki mixture. Sprinkle the tops with toasted sesame seeds for a delicious and light meal.
Common Questions:
The meat, veggies, and sauce freeze well, however, keep in mind the veggies will have a slightly different texture once frozen and thawed. Make sure to completely cool the mixture before freezing.
If you are trying to watch your sugar intake feel free to swap out items like the hoisin sauce for a sugar free honey. Start with 1 tbsp and add more as needed. You can also use a zero brown sugar like swerve. Use cauliflower rice for a lower-carb substitute.
