Why is it Called a Cobb Salad?

"Cobb salad is believed to have originated at the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood during the 1930s. Traditional versions typically include lettuce, chicken, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, blue cheese, and avocado.

Stories vary whether the salad was invented by Cobb or by his chef, Paul J. Posti. The legend is that Cobb had not eaten until near midnight, and so he mixed together leftovers he found in the kitchen, along with some bacon cooked by the line cook, and tossed it with their French dressing". ~Wikipedia

Cobb salad has always felt a little nostalgic to me. Growing up, it was one of my favorite things to order at Shari's restaurant whenever my family went out to eat. My mom also made homemade Cobb salads at home, so it became one of those meals that showed up throughout my childhood and felt special.

I also love making layered salads because they're easy to prepare ahead of time and always make an impressive presentation. Arranging the ingredients in a clear serving bowl creates beautiful layers while helping everything stay fresh until you're ready to serve. It's the perfect make-ahead salad for potlucks, parties, holidays, and family get-togethers.

How to Layer Cobb Salad

  • Prepare all your fresh ingredients, make the dressing, and cook bacon and eggs.
  • Use a clear bowl (if you have one) and layer ingredients starting with the lettuce first and ending with tomatoes and cheese.
  • You have the option to pour the dressing over the cheese and top with bacon, fresh avocado, and slices of hard boiled egg, or serve the dressing on the side. Place in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve.

Ang's Helpful Tips

  • Use a clear glass bowl. The colorful layers are part of what makes this salad special, and a clear bowl shows them off so nicely.
  • Keep wet ingredients toward the top. Tomatoes can release moisture, so placing them near the top helps prevent the lettuce from becoming soggy.
  • Wait to add dressing until serving. This keeps the salad crisp and fresh, especially if you're making it ahead.
  • Chop ingredients into similar-sized pieces. This makes the salad easier to serve and ensures every bite has a little bit of everything.
  • Large tongs are helpful to lift portions from the bottom of the bowl, ensuring each serving has a little of everything.

Common Questions

Can I use chicken instead of ham and turkey?

Absolutely. Cooked chicken can be substituted for the deli meats if you prefer a more traditional Cobb salad.

What dressing goes best with Cobb salad?

Growing up, we always enjoyed it with thousand island dressing but traditionally, ranch or blue cheese are popular choices. Vinaigrette's also make a light and delicious option.

How far in advance can I make this salad?

Up to 24 hours in advance. Unlike my Layered Green Salad recipe, make sure to leave the thousand island dressing on the side until just before serving.
