What You’ll Love About Marinated Steak and Potato Foil Packets:

  • A simple and fun dinner idea
  • Juicy steak and crisp potatoes
  • Easy to prep and clean up
  • Awesome summer recipe

I’m sharing another fantastic foil pack meal you are sure to enjoy all summer long. Steak bites marinate with your favorite store brand Italian dressing, than grilled in foil packs with seasoned red potatoes. The steak is juicy and the potatoes are creamy and tender with crisp edges. This is truly a meat and potato lovers meal.

We are having so much fun making foil pack recipes. My pineapple bbq chicken foil packs were a total hit with my family, along with grilled foil pack potatoes (basically a loaded baked potato taken to the next level). Maybe you’ve tried my s’mores nachos on the grill? Wow! What a fun treat that is!

Marinated Steak and Potato Foil Packets is a delicious and easy dinner. And if you’re like me and struggle to make the perfect steak on the grill, this is a very forgiving recipe for us amateurs. Because the steak is cut in small pieces and marinated, they stay nice and tender even if cooked well done.

Simple Ingredients:

  • Petite sirloin steak
  • Bottled Italian dressing
  • Red potatoes
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Butter
  • Garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley (optional)

What Is The Best Steak For Foil Pack Meals?

There are a lot of options for which steak you choose to use. We like petite or top sirloin. I usually just buy what is on sale. Ribeye, tri-tip, and T-bone are all great options. If you really want to spurge, a Filet Mignon is always a nice treat.

Potatoes:

This is another ingredient where you can use just about any kind of potato you like. For this recipe I like using the thinner skinned potatoes like red or Yukon gold. Russets are always a great option, or use a combination pack of baby potatoes and cut in quarters.

Seasoning and marinade:

I love this recipe because the seasonings are simple and the marinade is a matter of twisting the top off a bottle of dressing and dumping it over the steak. Feel free to use the seasonings you love on either the steak or potatoes, or swap out the Italian dressing for your favorite marinade. The whole idea is a flavorful steak and potato dinner whichever flavors you choose to use.

How To Make Marinated Steak and Potato Foil Packets:

Step 1. Add steak bites to a large Ziploc bag and season with salt and pepper. Pour in Italian dressing and seal the bag. Give everything a good toss than place in the refrigerator for at least an hour and up to 24 hours.

Step 2. Slice potatoes thin and place in another large Ziploc bag. Add oil and butter than season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Step 3. Stack two 12×12 inch foil sheets and spray the top layer with non-stick cooking spray. Add a portion of the potatoes in the center of the foil, then place some of the marinated beef tips over the top. Fold the foil tightly on all four sides.

Step 4. Heat grill to high heat and cook for 20 minutes flipping half way through. The steak should be cooked medium well, and potatoes tender with crisp edges.

Oven Method:

If you don’t have a grill no problem. Simply follow the recipe instructions for seasoning and assembling the foil packs. Heat oven to 350℉ and place foil packets on a large sheet pan. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until potatoes are tender and beef is cooked to your liking.

Recipe Tips:

  • Foil– make sure to use heavy duty foil to prevent the foil from tearing during the cooking and flipping process.
  • Don’t overfill packets- overfilling the foil packets will cause the potatoes and steak to steam preventing char marks which adds great flavor.
  • Your grill– every grill heats and cooks differently so use your best judgement with your grill type.
  • Allow the steak to rest– Steak is best after it has a chance to rest a few minutes when cooked. This will ensure a juicier steak.
