Key Ingredients

- Beef- I use lean ground beef. If using a higher fat beef, you'll want to remove any excess grease before making your gravy.
- Egg and panko breadcrumbs- Both these ingredients serve to help keep the meatballs together and easier to roll.
- Seasonings for the meatballs- ketchup, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, Umami seasoning blend, salt and pepper.
- Onions and mushrooms- This combo is the foundation for the gravy and offers wonderful, savory flavors.
- Butter and flour- Is the thickener for the gravy.
- Chicken broth- If you want more beefy flavor use beef broth.
Substitutions
- If you don't care for beef- While beef is a classic Salisbury steak ingredient, you can also use ground turkey or pork. Although keep in mind you may need to adjust the seasonings in the ground meat and gravy.
- Need this to be gluten-free- No problem! Use super fine almond flour in place of the panko crumbs, along with gluten-free Worcestershire sauce. For the flour and butter combo, use your favorite gf flour blend.

Step By Step Directions

Helpful Tips
- 💡Don't overmix the meat mixture- Overmixing the meat mixture can cause the meatballs to come out dense and tough. Mix just until the ingredients come together.
- 💡Use a small cookie scoop for uniform meatballs- I find that using a cookie scoop ensures all the meatballs come out the same size and cook evenly.
- 💡Turn the heat down to low when making the gravy- Make sure the heat isn't too high when you make the gravy otherwise it will lump together.

Instructions
Make Meatballs
- Add all the meatball ingredients minus the ground beef to a large mixing bowl. Use a fork to whisk in the egg and combine everything together. Add the ground beef. I use my clean hands and gently mix the beef until just combined. You don't want to overwork the beef mixture as it will make the meatballs tough. Use a small cookie scoop or roughly a tablespoon to form meatballs. You should end up with about 25 meatballs.1 egg½ cup panko breadcrumbs 2 tablespoon each- ketchup, Dijon mustard, and A1 steak sauce1 tablespoon Worcestershire 1 teaspoon Umami seasoning blend¼ teaspoon salt½ teaspoon pepper1 lb lean ground beef
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Place meatballs in the skillet and brown on both sides until golden. They don't need to be cooked all the way through, just browned. Transfer to a plate.
Make The Gravy
- While the pan is still hot add 1 more tablespoon olive oil along with onions and mushrooms. Brown mushrooms and onions for 3-4 minutes. Transfer to the same plate as the meatballs.½ cup onions8 ounces sliced mushrooms
- To the same skillet add butter and melt. Add the flour and use a whisk to combine the butter and flour. Cook butter and flour for 30-seconds. Continue to use your whisk and add Worcestershire and chicken broth. Whisk until you don't see any more lumps and the gravy starts to thicken. 3 tablespoon butter3 tablespoon flour2 tablespoon Worcestershire1 ¼ cups chicken broth
- Turn the heat down to low and add the meatballs and mushrooms/onions back to the skillet. Use a large spoon to gently combine the gravy with the meatballs. Simmer the meatballs on low for 5-6 more minutes or until fully cooked. Taste for seasonings and garnish with fresh or dried parsley and serve.
