What You’ll Love About Sweet Heat Texas Trash:

  • Super toasty and crunchy
  • Sweet, spicy, savory flavors
  • Awesome road trip snack
  • 10-minutes to whip up
  • Completely irresistible

If you’ve spent any time here on The Menu Maid website you know we love Chex party mix. Maybe you’ve tried my Fall Chex party mix, or Spring Chex Party mix? I even have a classic Oven Baked Party Mix.

We clearly love Chex mix in all forms!

Texas Trash aka…Chex Party Mix:

So how did Chex mix become Texas Trash? Or did Texas Trash become Chex mix? Supposedly, depending on where you live, folks call it different names. There’s nuts and bolts, Tv mix, bold party mix. What silly and fun names!

While all of these are basically the same thing, Texas Trash snack mix is known for bolder savory flavors like creole spice and hot sauce. It has depth and a nice kick but not too spicy. The touch of brown sugar adds richness and a subtle sweetness. I don’t think this is a common ingredient in Texas trash but I love sweet and spicy mixed together.

The great thing about a snack mix like this is you can really have fun with your crunchy ingredients. Often times with Chex mix I buy what is available because sometimes I can’t find some of the classic ingredients.

With summer just around the corner Sweet Heat Texas Trash is a fantastic snack to pack up for campouts, lazy days at the lake, or a long road trip. Or just make a batch for when you get the need for a salty, crunchy snack.

Fair warning though…this is a highly addicting snack. Here’s what you need!

Crunchy Ingredients:

  • Corn Chex
  • Rice Chex
  • Bugles (original)
  • Oyster crackers
  • Mixed nuts
  • Pretzel sticks or twists

Butter Sauce:

  • Butter
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Creole seasoning
  • Seasoned salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Brown sugar
  • Hot sauce

Other Ingredients You Might Enjoy:

Like I mentioned above, you can really get creative with the crunchy items you add to your Texas trash. You can also adjust the spice level and sweetness. My Texas trash is not super spicy or sweet. It’s the perfect balance for our taste. Here are some additional ingredients to play with and make it your own trashy mix! 😉

  • Plain cheerios
  • Bagel chips
  • Rye crisps
  • Other pretzel shapes
  • Wheat Chex
  • Cheez-it crackers
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Favorite hot sauce

How To Make Sweet Heat Texas Trash:

Step 1. Add all the crunchy ingredients to a large bowl and toss gently.

Step 2. Melt butter and seasonings in a microwave safe bowl then stir to combine.

Step 3. Pour the butter sauce over the crunchy ingredients and stir to combine.

Step 4. Spread mixture evenly on a large sheet pan and bake until golden and crunchy.

How Long Does Texas Trash Last?

Most recipes say that Chex mix or Texas trash will last up to two weeks but I have enjoyed it well over 3, even 4 weeks! Now, assuming you don’t have a huge family. Fortunately we are a family of 3 so we can stretch this snack mix for a few weeks.

Recipe Tips:

  • Baking– make sure to bake the mix until it’s good and golden brown. This will ensure it’s super crunchy when it cools.
  • Seasonings– you want to make sure there is plenty of seasoning on your mix so don’t be shy with it. Have fun with the flavors and add what sounds good.
  • Sheet pan– for proper toasting make sure your sheet pan is big enough so the layer isn’t too thick. If not, use two pans.

  • 3 cups rice Chex cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups original bugles
  • 1 1/2 cups oyster crackers
  • 1 cup mixed nuts
  • 1 1/2 cups seasoned pretzel twists or regular pretzel sticks

Butter Mixture:

  • 1 1/2 cups butter I use salted
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp creole seasoning
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce I use Cholula
  • 2 tbsp packed brown sugar use more if you want it sweeter

Instructions

Preheat oven to 250℉.

  • Add all the snack mix ingredients to an extra large bowl. Toss gently with a spatula to combine.
  • In a microwave safe dish add the butter and seasonings. Microwave on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until butter is fully melted. Stir to combine the butter and the seasonings.
  • Pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients and use a large spoon or spatula to coat the Chex mixture. I usually stir and fold the ingredients for at least 2-minutes to ensure each piece is well coated.
  • Spread mixture evenly on a large sheet pan and bake in preheat oven for 30-minutes. Give everything a good toss and bake another 15-minutes. Toss again and place back in the oven. Turn heat up to 300℉ and bake another 5-8 minutes or until the top is a deep golden brown. Remove from the oven and make sure it's cooled completely before transferring to a container to store.

This provides a couple of twists to the traditional Chex mix by using heat and sweet. And the combination works. I make this for all road trips. As long as the crunchy element is equal to the recipe you could get creative with add-ins. I have added rye crisps, pretzel braids, and life cereal I place of the rice and corn Chex.
