Ground beef mixture
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup yellow onion, diced fine
- pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp Wocestershire
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp BBQ sauce I used no sugar added sweet baby rays
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- salt and pepper to taste
Burger Bowls
- 1 medium head iceberg lettuce, chopped washed and dried
- 2 medium size tomatoes, chopped
- 1 cup red onion, thinly silced
- 1 cup sliced dill pickles
- 2 avocados, sliced thin
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1000 island dressing
Heat a medium skillet to medium heat and add olive oil, chopped yellow onions, and a pinch of salt. Cook 5-minites or until golden brown.
Add ground beef to the onions and crumble. Cook until no longer pink and drain any excess grease. Incorporate the water, Worcestershire, mustard, BBQ sauce, and garlic powder. Cook another 5-7 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and pepper to taste and remove from the heat to cool slightly.
Build burger bowls by adding lettuce and the rest of the toppings, ending with 1000 island dressing.
Tips:
- Lettuce– Wash and store lettuce in the refrigerator in a sealed plastic bag for at least 1-hour before chopping. This ensures the leaves are nice and crunchy. For best results use iceberg or romaine.
- Ground meat– The best, classic burger flavor will come from using ground beef but ground turkey also works great. If you’re using a higher fat ground beef, drain the excess grease.
- Toppings- Use other burger toppings like crumbled bacon, sautéed mushrooms, blue cheese crumbles, and caramelized onions.
