Taco seasoning is one of the most used and popular seasonings in many kitchens. If you’ve never made your own, you will love how easy and how much better it tastes than store bought packets. Along with my Ranch Seasoning Mix taco seasoning is another spice I use regularly in my cooking. My family loves Mexican flavors so it’s important I keep a steady stock of taco seasoning on hand.

5 Reasons Why I Make Homemade Taco Seasoning:

  1. Easy to make
  2. Tastes better homemade
  3. Cheaper than store brand packets
  4. Convenient
  5. Ingredients I trust

When I first started making Homemade Taco Seasoning I would only make enough for one single recipe. Because spices have a long shelf life, I now make a large batch to last me several recipes.

Ingredients For Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix:

  • Chili powder
  • Ground cumin
  • Smoked or regular paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Dried Oregano
  • Salt & pepper
  • Cornstarch (optional)

Customize Taco Seasoning:

The ratio of spices I use happens to be what we love but use as little or as much of each spice to taste.

  • For a less smoky taste, use regular paprika.
  • For less heat omit the cayenne pepper.
  • Adjust the salt to taste.
  • Cornstarch is optional.

Making Your Own Taco Seasoning is fast and easy:

Making your own Taco Seasoning only requires one single step!

1. Add all the spices, seasonings, and cornstarch (optional) to a jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake well to combine.

Storing Homemade Taco Seasoning:

I love using mason jars or jars with a hinged lid for my bulk seasonings and spices. Place Taco Seasoning in a cool dark place like a pantry or spice cabinet for 6 months or more!

Using Homemade Taco Seasoning:

I have a lot of recipes here on my website using Mexican seasonings. Having a batch of Taco Seasoning made and ready to go makes prepping my meals a little easier.

NOTE: 2 tablespoons of Homemade Taco Seasoning is equal to 1 packet of store bought taco seasoning.

Often times I season to taste for my soups and casseroles. A good rule of thumb is to start with 1 tablespoon of homemade seasoning and add more to taste.

Suggestions:

  • Seasoning ground meat- Use 2 tablespoons of seasoning per 1 lb of ground meat.
  • Seasoning chicken– When searing, roasting, or grilling chicken, use a 1/2 teaspoon seasoning per side.
  • Add to soups and chili – Add 1-2 tablespoons of seasoning to soups and chili for a bold Mexican flavor.
  • Seasoning white rice– Add 1 tablespoon of seasoning to plain white rice while it cooks.
