What Is Pierogi? pronounced (puh•row•gee)

Pierogi is a dumpling usually filled with some kind of vegetable, potatoes and onions, and even meat. You can find it fresh in the refrigerated section near the pasta, or even frozen at your grocery store. Pierogi is a great item to dress up with sauces, add to soups, or toss in a skillet like I did with smoked sausage and cabbage.

Fast and Easy Meal!

The great thing about this recipe is there really isn’t a lot of prep work involved. The only slicing and dicing is your sausage and onions. You will need to pre-boil the pierogi but that only takes just a few minutes, then everything comes together in a skillet for a fast meal. It’s a hearty dish with lots of savory flavors that make this meal pure comfort food.

Ingredients:

  • Pierogi (cheddar and creamy potato)
  • Butter
  • Avocado or oil
  • Smoked turkey sausage rope– or use your favorite brand
  • Onions
  • Coleslaw mix
  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Smoked paprika
  • Celery salt
  • Black pepper
  • Fresh parsley (optional)


How To Make Pierogi and Smoked Sausage Skillet Meal:

Step 1. You’ll want to pre-boil your pierogi, drain and set aside.

Step 2. In a large non-stick skillet heat butter and oil. Brown sausage and onions then toss in coleslaw and seasonings. Cook until cabbage is wilted.

Step 3. Transfer sausage and cabbage mixture to a large bowl. Add a little more butter and oil to the heated skillet. Gently place pierogi in a single layer in the pan. Sear on both sides until golden brown.

Step 4. Add the sausage and cabbage back to the skillet with the pierogi and toss gently. Top with fresh parsley if desired and serve.

Recipe Tips:

  • Pierogi comes in different sizes and flavors so use what you would enjoy. They have mini size ones that I think would work really well in this recipe.
  • Make sure to use a non-stick skillet. This will ensure the pierogi doesn’t stick when browning.

  • 1 smoked turkey sausage rope sliced in 1/2 moon slices or use your favorite smoked sausage brand
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 (14) ounce package coleslaw mix I use the one with carrots, red, and white cabbage
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp celery salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • fresh parsley for garnish optional

Instructions
 

  • You’ll want to boil your pierogi for about 3 minutes in a medium pot then drain. Set aside.
  • In a large non-stick skillet heat butter and oil. Add sliced sausage and cook until golden brown in spots, about 5-mintues. Add onions and cook another couple minutes then toss in coleslaw mix and seasonings. Sauté for 3-4 minutes just until the cabbage is wilted.
  • Transfer sausage and cabbage mixture to a large bowl. Meanwhile add a little more butter and oil to the heated skillet. Gently place cooked pierogi in a single layer in the pan. Sear on both sides until golden brown, about 2-minutes per side.
  • Add the sausage and cabbage back to the skillet with the pierogi and toss gently. Top with fresh parsley if desired and serve.
