Combined fall Chex mix in a bowl

Classic Chex mix has always been a fun snack I enjoy making during the Christmas season, and with Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share a fall version using pumpkin spice for a unique twist.

My favorite addition to this Sweet and Spicy Fall Chex Mix has to be the bugles. Seriously do you remember eating these when you were a kid? I love how light and crunchy they are with a salty corn taste. A snack that’s really hard to stop eating. Bugles are also perfect for Chex mix because the hollowness and texture makes it easy to season with your favorite flavors.

Ingredients For Sweet and Spicy Fall Chex Mix:

  • Chex mix cereal (corn or rice)
  • Plain bugles
  • Pretzels (I like the square ones)
  • Unsalted, roasted peanuts, cashews, or almonds
  • Combination of candy corn and pumpkin candy
  • Fall colored chocolate candies like M&M’s
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Cayenne pepper

Other Variations For Sweet and Spicy Fall Chex Mix:

Additional ingredients that work well with this Fall Chex mix are bagel chips, cheerios, oyster crackers, and graham crackers. Add other spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. If you’re not a big candy corn fan, feel free to add other candies that you do like. I actually don’t like candy corn except in Chex mix. The chewy candy with the crisp cereal and bugles is an awesome combo.

Is This Super Spicy?

The spice level all depends on your taste but I would call this a mild spice Chex mix. If you like it spicier, add an additional 1/4 to 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper. If you don’t want any spice, omit the cayenne pepper all together.

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 275℉. For easy clean-up line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2. In an extra large bowl add the Chex cereal, bugles, pretzels, and nuts.

Step 3. Combine melted butter, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and cayenne pepper until well mixed. Add butter mixture to the large bowl with the cereal ingredients and toss gently with a large spoon. I usually do this for 1-2 minutes to make sure all the ingredients are well coated. Note: Do not add the candy at this time.

Step 4. Divide the cereal mixture between the two sheet pans and spread out evenly. Place in the oven and bake for 30-minutes, stirring once half way through. Remove from the oven and cool completely.

Step 5. When the Chex mix is cooled add the candies and enjoy!

Fun Ways To Share and Serve Chex Mix:

  • A fun way to share Chex mix with friends or coworkers is by filling up these harvest snack size bags and passing them out. Everyone will love their own individual bag and feel thankful that you thought of them.
  • If you’re sharing the Chex mix at a gathering from a large bowl, set out small plastic cups so everyone can have their own individual serving. If you’re anything like my husband then you might appreciate less fingers in the bowl. 😉
