Grilled veggies are the best especially during the grilling season, and asparagus is one of our favorites. It requires very little prep work and it lends great flavor with just a couple seasonings. Roasting and grilling asparagus brings out a nice sweetness and that smoky flavor makes these irresistible.

How To Prepare Asparagus Spears:

  • You’ll first want to rinse the asparagus spears well with cool water. I like to toss them in a large bowl of water and swish them around a bit.
  • Next, remove the ends by either snapping them by hand or cutting them with a sharp knife. The last 1-2 inches are fibrous and woodsy and not pleasant to eat.
  • Now place clean and trimmed asparagus on a large plate or sheet pan and evenly spread out. I like using the sheet pan because they lay flat and it’s easier to season them this way.
  • Drizzly with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Give the pan a good shake or use hands to roll the asparagus back and forth to coat all sides.
  • Now they are ready for the grill!

Grilling Asparagus Spears:

  • If I’m using my indoor grill pan I heat to medium heat and brush the pan with cooking oil. I love having the option to grill indoors when the weather is cooler. If using my outdoor propane grill, I use a medium high heat and skip brushing on cooking oil. Every outdoor grill is different so you may need to oil the surface first.
  • I place medium size asparagus on the hot grill and cook 6 minutes on the first side and 5 on the other. Times may vary depending on the size of the spears, but generally it’s about 5 minutes per side.
  • When using the outdoor grill make sure to place the spears opposite direction of the grates so they don’t fall through.

Don’t Have an Indoor or Outdoor Grill?

Roasted asparagus is just as delicious and caramelizes nicely in a hot oven. Heat oven to 425℉ and follow the same steps for preparing the spears. Place on a large sheet pan with a rimmed edge and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Give it a good shake to coat each piece well and roast for 10-12 minutes or until desired tenderness.

My favorite way to serve grilled asparagus is with lemon wedges. The little bit of citrus along with the sweet, salty, and smoky flavor is the best combo. We hope you enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb medium size asparagus, ends trimmed see recipe notes for tips
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

If using an indoor grill pan heat to medium heat and brush cooking oil directly on pan. For an outdoor grill heat to medium high heat (about 400°). Depending on your grill you may need to brush grates with cooking oil.

  • Place trimmed asparagus on a large pan or plate and drizzle with olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. I usually do about 1/2 teaspoon of each. Give the pan a good shake or roll back and forth with hands to coat spears in seasonings.
  • Lay asparagus directly on grill. If using an outdoor grill make sure to place spears in the opposite direction of the grill grates so they don't fall through. Grill for 6 minutes on first side, flip with tongs and grill another 5 minutes or until desired tenderness.
  • Serve with fresh lemon wedges.

Notes

Tips:
Trimming Asparagus- The ends of asparagus are fibrous and woody so it’s not pleasant to eat. You can snap the ends or use a sharp knife. Generally you’ll need to pull off at least 1-inch, sometimes 2. The ends will automatically snap off where the tender part of the spear starts and the woodsy part begins. I typically use a knife because it’s quicker and I get a clean cut.
Seasoning Asparagus- Aside from olive oil, salt and pepper, you can add other seasonings like garlic powder, chili powder, red pepper flakes, lemon pepper, etc… Freshly grated parmesan cheese is another great way to finish asparagus. After you plate the cooked asparagus sprinkle with parm cheese and red pepper flakes.
If You Don’t Have A Grill- Roasted asparagus is just as delicious and caramelizes nicely in a hot oven. Heat oven to 425℉. Follow the same steps for preparing the spears. Place on a large sheet pan with a rimmed edge and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Give it a good shake to coat each piece well and roast for 10-12 minutes or until desired tenderness.
